"If we don't invest in modern middle schools that support student learning based on the new science of adolescence, we are losing a tremendous opportunity to set our students up for success both in and beyond middle school."

— Nancy Deutsch, CCS parent and Director of Youth-Nex, the UVA Center to Promote Effective Youth Development

“Students perform better and teachers are better able to do their jobs in well maintained classrooms that are well lit and properly ventilated. Conversely, with crumbling buildings students feel devalued and instruction suffers.”

— Leah Puryear, Retired Education Administrator and former CCS School Board member

“At the risk of being overly direct, we view Buford Middle School as the chronological counterpart to the Dewberry building. The school reconfiguration project was initiated in 2009, which was also the year in which the hotel was to be opened. For the past 13 years, both stalled projects have been the subject of endless municipal hand-wringing but no meaningful action. The primary difference between those two projects is that the hotel is the more obvious, but less serious, project. It has only been harming Charlottesville’s image. Not appropriately funding our public schools has been harming Charlottesville’s children.”
